Wireless on a boat

Arial somewhere up hereDespite living in a marina, right next to the wireless box arial, We have very little signal (red arrow on the side of the building 60 foot away).

Looking at the router, it looks like it is a TP Link WR841N, while this £20/30 router could work well in a house, it suffers from being a bit rubbish in a commercial/heaver use environment (the TP Link WR841N is plugged into the marina BT Voyager 220v).

Not to mention that the best place for me to get signal on our boat is as shown on the right, with my laptop on the kitchen work surface, and the side hatch open (metal boats make brilliant faraday cages), I suspect that any further away from the arial and even this would cease to work well.

To try and overcome this, and so I can work in a more comeftable location in the boat I have drawn on the powers of the blogosphere, I saw the Ubiquiti Bullet M2 mentioned somewhere on a blog talking about how to get better internet connectivity in a house. Looking for one in the UK I was directed to 4Gon Solution site as Amazon was being unhelpful.

I have ordered the following:

  • EnGenius EAG-2408 Outdoor 2.4GHz 8dBi Wireless Outdoor Omni Antenna [link]
  • Ubiquiti Bullet M2 HP Point-to-Point/Point-to-Multipoint [link]
  • Ubiquiti POE-15 POE Adapter for Ubiquiti Bullets [link]

I will need to work out how to make the POE injector take the 12V from the boat, and feed it into the Bullet M2.

Will see how this all goes together when it all arrives, wish me luck!
